While in Florida two
weeks ago, I visited an old friend who is
recovering from cancer surgery. "Mae" is a
bright eyed
Christian Science
practitioner who turns ninety this year. My
lady friend Andy and I went there to cheer
her up and left feeling inspired and
energized ourselves.
Mae's prodigious
spiritual knowledge that we are
manifestations of God helps her have a great
attitude about her radical surgery. Even
while recovering from surgery, she's busy
counseling others, studying scripture,
and cheering up staff and other patients.
Instead of talking excessively about her
pain and plight, she was interested in how
we are doing and what's new
She looked at us with a
big smile and said, "You two sure look damn
happy!"
When Andy sang the
Lord's Prayer in Aramaic to her, Mae said
she had been waiting her entire life to hear
something that beautiful. We talked about
all the evidence that we really are forever
beings
and I gave her a copy
of "Soul Proof."
We discussed the truth
of our oneness with All That Is, our
inseparability from Divine Power that is our
true nature. The more we realize this, we
all agreed, the more we can face all life's
challenges--even cancer surgery--with peace,
faith, and joy.
We talked about the
importance of building a bedrock foundation
of enlightenment so we are prepared when
life's inevitable
difficulties arise. We
held hands and told each other how much we
love each other and how we've appreciated
being in each others' lives for over 30
years.
It was an extremely
soulful experience that deepened my
conviction that every event in life, even
the "bad" parts, can be blessings and
opportunities for service. Life truly is an
exciting experience when we remember we are
eternal spiritual beings having a very
temporary human experience.
Mae's knowledge of our
infinite natures stems from her lifelong
religious studies and firsthand experience.
Just think,
there are seven other
categories of proof in addition to these!
Yes, my friends, a vast
amount of collective evidence--including
many clinical and contemporary
findings--proves that we each really are
immortal spiritual beings. This is the good
news that sets us free, that helps us make
sense of what often seems to be a chaotic
world.
We can't stop the waves
of life from crashing around us, but we can
learn to surf through them with courage and
style.
Truly, we each are
"soul proof", just as a watch is shock proof
or water proof. Our real selves do not die,
cannot be hurt, and
can handle any outward
circumstances with style. Life is indeed a
totally safe and magnificent adventure
amidst eternity.
