In 2019 – 2020, a series of studies at the University of Arizona definitively demonstrated scientifically that life continues after physical death. This research was conducted by Gary E. Schwartz PhD and a team of electrical engineers, software specialists, evidential mediums, and postmaterial (so-called ‘deceased’) luminaries at the Laboratory for Advances in Consciousness and Health.

This is, obviously, a new and exciting era for humanity. When understood and internalized – even just a bit – The Great News can help you make the shift:
- FROM thinking, believing, and acting as if your time on earth is unfair, meaningless, cruel, and ends with cessation of consciousness or the possibility of endless suffering.
- TO thinking, believing, and acting as if this earthly experience is a totally meaningful, safe, and magnificent adventure amidst forever.
Upgrading your language can help you adopt a greater reality perspective and live based on the second worldview. That, in turn, can help you create the greatest life YOU have envisioned, fulfill your purposes for being on earth, serve others, and enjoy the journey. In my articles, l:
- Will use the term ‘YOU’ to describe the totality of your energy / being. The real you may manifest in different spacetime ways simultaneously. Only 20% of your consciousness may be needed for an earthly experience. The term ‘YOU’ recognizes both of these possibilities.
- Will not use the terms ‘die, departed, deceased, or dead’ without single quotation marks since those have strongly entrenched and erroneous meanings indicating an end of life.
- Will use the terms ‘bodily death’ and ‘death of the earthly form’ to remind you that only the earth-suit dies. The rest – all the intelligence, love, personality, memories, preferences, sense of humor, and much more – continues living in other parts of the field of all possibilities.
- Will use the terms changed worlds, passed on, transitioned and others that aptly describe a continuation of consciousness after bodily death.
- Will primarily refer to those who have passed on as postmaterial persons. That term recognizes the points in #3. I also will use soul, consciousness, essence, and awareness.
- Will primarily refer to ‘physical humans living on earth’ as material persons. Why? Because those terms within single quotation marks may apply to postmaterial persons: they can have physicality, visit earth, and are still human in meaningful ways.
- The terms lower versus higher energy emotions / ways of being, are not judgmental or subjective. They are based on well-established observations that ‘as you think, so shall you be.’ Those terms are also based on objective measurements by, for example, David Hawkins PhD, MD author of Power Versus Force. He and other researchers found that higher-energy emotions of peace, joy, and love calibrate at 600, 540, and 500 respectively. Lower-energy emotions of anger, fear, and guilt calibrate at 150, 100, and 30.
- I will use single quotations marks with words such as ‘lose and fail’. The Great News and collective afterlife evidence can expand your worldview about what seem to be losses and failures. We can’t accurately judge the big picture of life – what is lost or how we failed – with our limited human senses.
- To recognize and respect different genders and sexual identifications, I will alternate using ‘he’ or ‘she’ and related pronouns. Depending on a person’s orientation, one, both, or neither of those may apply.

Evidential Mediums
Can extrasensorily gifted humans accurately communicate with those who have passed on?
This question has been considered by many people since recorded time. Scientific studies of evidential mediums replicated at five universities and research centers have affirmatively answered this question.
Evidential medium is a term for those gifted persons who can sense those who have passed on. These individuals can sometimes provide specific and detailed information that appears to come from those who have changed worlds. Under controlled university research settings, the medium could not know this information unless, according to one hypothesis, they are communicating with those who have passed on.
However, there are other alternative explanations for how mediums detect this information. Gary E. Schwartz PhD wrote about this in his 2010 article: Possible application of silicon photomultiplier technology to detect the presence of spirit and intention: three proof-of-concept experiments. (EXPLORE: The Journal of Science and Healing 6, pages 166-171).
The survival of consciousness hypothesis has been receiving increased research as well as media attention. A brief review of historical and current research on mediumship was provided by Beischel and Schwartz in this journal in 2007. Contemporary research has employed triple blind studies, and some ongoing research is using quintuple-blind protocols. As sophisticated as contemporary research with mediums is, the interpretation of the findings is limited. The primary reason is that the presence of spirit must be inferred from accurately scored information provided by research mediums. The primary theoretical question concerns the source of the information.
After ruling out fraud and other tricks (sometimes called cold reading), rater bias, and possible experimenter informational leakage or bias by using triple-blind designs, the remaining possible explanations fall into three broad categories: (1) basic psi (for example, telepathic reading by the medium of the sitter’s mind), (2) super-psi (for example, hypothesized retrieval of “dead” [i.e., nondynamic] information from the “vacuum” of space [sometimes described as a quantum hologram] or “akashic” field), and (3) survival of consciousness (i.e., direct communication with the continuing consciousness/spirit of a deceased person).
However, the likelihood of the first possibility – reading the sitter’s mind – explaining the results has been weakened by this: on many documented occasions, mediums have conveyed details about ‘departed’ loved ones that the sitter did not know but only learned later.
And, to be honest, #2 (stored information about the ‘deceased’) and #3 (survival of consciousness) sound very similar to me. In our book Greater Reality Living, Dr. Schwartz and I variously use the synonyms energy, consciousness, spirit, information, awareness, soul, and info-energy to describe what survives after physical death.
Mediums may detect others with their usual senses of sight (known as clairvoyance), hearing (clairaudience), feeling (clairsentience) or a combination of these. More often, however, their senses seem more subtle as if coming directly from or through their minds. This has been described as seeing a person who has transitioned from earth with their mind’s eye, hearing via telepathy, or having a strong knowing or feeling.
Some people don’t know about the legitimacy of certain mediums because of abuse by fakes. Fraudulent mediums may use deception, cold readings, fishing, and other unscrupulous ways to deceive clients.
Other mediums provide poor to mediocre results with very general information. Consider, for example, a medium who tells a seventy-year-old sitter that his grandmother has died and loves him very much. That isn’t impressive except to those grasping at straws because of fear of death or so badly wanting to have contact.
Some people may dismiss the possibility of valid mediumship because their religious denomination considers communing with spirits to be dangerous. As discussed in Soul Proof, these scriptural passages primarily come from the Old Testament book Leviticus that is thought to have been written around 400 B.C. However, history reports numerous examples of mediums who were initially considered demonic by the established church and now are viewed as valid.
Evidential mediums categorically deny any evil intentions; to the contrary, they consider their extrasensory gifts to be a sacred responsibility. The ones I know are very loving and have deep relationships with their angels, guides, master teachers, and Creator.
Just as on earth, there appear to be imbalanced beings in other realms. These so-called capricious and malicious spiritsmay want to hurt or confuse others because they have been hurt and/or are misinformed. Just because postmaterial persons can communicate doesn’t mean they are wise and trustworthy. Professional mediums always use discernment in evaluating the message and the messenger. They pray and affirm that the process of interdimensional communication is guided and guarded by the power of love and light.
Medium with genuine abilities to communicate with the unseen world provide a vital service. As you will learn, there are a number of mediums whose work has been authenticated by scientists, psychologists, psychiatrists and many grateful clients.
Again, that discernment by evidential mediums is not mind reading or telepathy is evidenced in several ways. First, mediums report communications from the souls who come through, not necessarily those whom their clients hope to contact. Next, recorded accounts of actual sessions show mediums insisting on a given point even when clients deny it. Also, some mediumistic messages reveal future events that subjects could not be thinking of. Finally, some readings contain information from the past that clients did not know at the time of the reading but later learned.
A further measure of validity is that, prior to the readings, evidential mediums know nothing about their clients except their first names. They have no prior knowledge of the subjects’ situation, the reason for their visit, or whom they hope to hear from. Even so, numerous accurate details are provided that are comforting and healing for the clients.
In Messages from the Masters, Brian Weiss MD noted, “As I have explored more and more of the human mind and the limits of consciousness, I have come across some people with extraordinary abilities. Some can access information not normally available through the five senses. They seem to possess a sixth sense, an inner knowing or intuition, and sometimes the information received in this manner can be quite accurate. Others have mediumistic abilities, the capacity to receive and to transmit messages and knowledge from beings on the other side, or from other sources of consciousness outside the usual limits of the body and the brain.”
Here’s an example of how transformative a great medium reading can be. This was sent to me this week by a recently bereaved mother:
Yesterday, I had a zoom session with a medium from your list. After my son passed on four months ago, I was very skeptical about the afterlife. But the things this medium shared blew me away. My son was totally there in heaven talking to me through the medium. She was able to tell me the place he died, the date of his service, the name of his best friend, his tattoo, and more. Amazing!! My life has changed!
Multiple double-blinded laboratory mediumship experiments have been published over the past twenty years from research at the University of Arizona, University of Virginia, University of Glasgow in Scotland, Institute of Noetic Sciences, and Windbridge Institute. In addition, imaging studies of mediums’ brains suggest that mediumship is more than imagination. These findings were published by Temple University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Institute of Noetic Sciences.
In one study, Gary E. Schwartz PhD investigated five mediums and their abilities to accurately communicate with people who had passed on. Using strict laboratory procedures, the mediums could not see or even hear the people who hoped to receive messages from their loved ones in spirit. Furthermore, the mediums had no way of knowing anything about the subjects: not their names, gender, age bracket, background, city of residence, or any other detail.
After reviewing his experimental research on mediums, Dr. Schwartz concluded that the information consistently retrieved could best be explained as coming from living beings. Information was obtained before the medium ever spoke with the subjects. At times, the subject disagreed with some of the information from the medium that ultimately turned out to be correct. Mediums were sometimes corrected by those in unseen realms. The data, Schwartz concluded, appeared to be as valid, convincing and living as the mediums, subjects, skeptics and scientists themselves.
It appears that some individuals who call themselves mediums rely on ‘cold reading’ techniques as skeptics have correctly asserted. Others may use ‘hot reading’ techniques with information secretly obtained before the session. However, in his experiments, every conceivable measure was used to ensure valid readings. Magicians, other scientists and professional documentarians with video-cameras assisted to spot any cheating. No one who observed the laboratory’s multi-blinded experiments has been able to point out any critical flaws in the scientific methodology.
No rational alternative explanations have been found for the findings. Statistical analyses show that the chances the totality of the results could have occurred randomly are at least 1 in 1 trillion. Finding a probability of chance in the 1 out of 100 or 1,000 range is the usual requirement for publishing research in respected journals. The data from the medium research is thus 1 billion times the requirement for acceptance of data validity in traditional scientific journals.
States Dr. Schwartz, “Scientists and nonscientists alike are experiencing a test of faith: in this case, whether we can believe in the scientific method itself. Because if we are to put our faith in the scientific method, and trust what the data reveal, we are led to the hypothesis that the universe is more wondrous than imagined in our wildest flights of fancy. The totality of the findings is surprisingly consistent with the concept of life after death and what we call the ‘living soul hypothesis.’”
To summarize, double-blinded and triple-blinded experiments from 1997 to 2017 with genuine research mediums have indicated that accurate information can be obtained from those who have physically died. In addition, specific hypothesized spirit collaborators from the other side – including famous scientists, inventors, business leaders and entertainers – appear to be actively collaborating to help us on earth. These experiments and findings have been reported in four of Dr. Schwartz’s books: The Afterlife Experiments, The Truth about Medium, The Sacred Promise, and An Atheist in Heaven.
I have met some most of the mediums who have been evaluated by Dr. Schwartz. They are among the most loving, intelligent, and compassionate people I know and I highly recommend their services as mediums. These include John Edward, Suzanne Giesemann, George Anderson, Susanne Wilson, Suzane Northrup, Tina Powers, Alan Hugenot, Mark Anthony, Carl Buehl, and Jamie Clark. My fiancé Andy Lee was also found to be highly evidential in a blinded reading.
I’ve observed all of them ‘at work’ and am amazed by their abilities to relay meaningful, accurate, and detailed messages from those living in the next phase of life. Before becoming full-time mediums, most of these sensorily gifted people held important jobs: TV reporter, university administrator, film producer, attorney, RN, engineer, etc. Giesemann was a Navy commander and top aid to the Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staffs.
Their previous jobs and stellar work as mediums do not merit inaccurate labels that skeptics and critics of mediums use: occult, woo-woo, fakes, or crackpots. Their high integrity, love, and caring – combined with verification of their abilities by scientific researchers – are undeniably convincing.
One of my most amazing experiences with a medium occurred in early 2018 in Tucson while attending a group reading by John Edward. John was one of the first mediums that Dr. Schwartz researched at the University of Arizona in 1998. Repeated and well controlled double blinded studies clearly indicated that John’s abilities were very accurate at highly statistically significant levels.
Subsequent HBO specials featuring both of them put John on the map and led to his best-selling books, TV shows, and live group readings. To show his appreciation for validating his mediumistic abilities twenty years earlier, John gave Dr. Schwartz four front row tickets. I was invited to attend and enjoyed meeting John backstage before his presentation.
Approximately 250 people were in attendance and John ‘read’ for about fifteen people during the two hour session. If I were a close-minded skeptic, I would have claimed that these subjects were planted beforehand. However, sitting with Dr. Schwartz reminded me that John’s abilities were verified in well controlled research studies. What followed blew my mind even though I have been studying consciousness topics for over forty years.
With person after person, John provided specific details: names, relationships, time and method of passing on, and details such as childhood nicknames. Most impressively, he would not accept rejection from subjects but, rather, told them to try to remember.
The most amazing example of this occurred with a woman in her sixties who was just a few rows away from me. John had already provided several specific details about her father and was ready to move on when he said her father was showing him a banana. ‘What is it about bananas? This seems very important.’ The woman said her father really didn’t like bananas, but he did like grapefruit.
John replied, ‘No, it’s not about fruit. It’s a big banana.’ The woman had no idea; John told her to think about and he would check back later. He went on to deliver detailed information with two other people, then returned to the woman sitting near me. ‘Any ideas about the banana?’ She couldn’t think of anything and John said, ‘Try harder. Your dad will not let up on this.’
John read for a few more people then returned to the woman. ‘Banana?’ The woman couldn’t think of anything and John said, ‘Your dad is so persistent about this.’ Then the woman’s face turned white, her mouth dropped open, and tears started flowing. ‘Oh my God’ she said. ‘I had forgotten all about that. When a was a little girl, my dad had a banana costume. He dressed up like a banana every Halloween!’
The audience was stunned. If John were a fake, he would have dropped the banana topic so he didn’t look bad. But that woman’s father was apparently right there and wanted his daughter – and the rest of us – to know more deeply that everything but the human form continues after physical death.
On the way home, we were all excited and energized. Even though I am well versed in the afterlife evidence, my internalized knowing that we are immortal beings was deepened several notches. I shared the following analogy with the others: imagine going to a baseball game and seeing the same player hit fifteen homeruns out of the park. That’s what it was like watching John’s group reading.
